Samantha Woll was the president of Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue in Detroit, Michigan. She became president of the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue in 2022. Samantha was fatally stabbed on October 21, 2023.
Sam believed in Muslim-Jewish partnership.
No matter what was going on in the world, Sam was committed to strengthening bonds of community, understanding and solidarity across lines of difference, particularly with our Muslim, Arab, and Palestinian neighbors here in Detroit.
She truly exemplified tikkun olam, which came from a deep place in her heart. In 2005, Sam was presented with an award at our annual end-of-the-year gala for her dedication to tzedakah (charitable righteousness) and social action.
Sam supported Elissa Slotkin because of her dedication to the community. Again, Sam's passion was remarkable and her insight into so many issues was impressive. She has done work with Dana Nessel, Michigan's Attorney General and many social justice initiatives she was working on in the City of Detroit. The revitalization of Detroit was Sam's pet project and her role as a change agent has been obvious.
Sam and I worked together at a mobile dental clinic and we got on the subject of social justice. We worked on the social impact committee. We organized a dental clinic and supported a water brigade in Flint. This is a devastating blow to the community. In the Black community we often refer to people of good character, solid form and good values as “good people” Sam was one of the best!
REST IN POWER, SWEET SAM.
