It’s my honor to introduce you to Charlene Allen, a brilliant storyteller and social justice advocate who works tirelessly with community organizations to heal trauma and challenge the injustice of mass incarceration. Charlene holds an MFA from The New School, a JD from Northeastern University, and a BA from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She resides in Brooklyn with her fabulous family and their hilariously silly dog.

Charlene made her debut with Play the Game, and now she’s back with her latest novel, My Fairy God Somebody, which Kirkus Reviews calls:

"A richly drawn story that explores the precarious construction of identity and the pain of complex family dynamics." (Starred Review)

About My Fairy God Somebody

This contemporary YA novel weaves together mystery, romance, and friendship in a powerful story perfect for fans of We Deserve Monuments and Far from the Tree.

Clae has always been told her father abandoned her as a baby, but when she discovers clues about a mysterious figure she calls her “fairy god somebody,” her resolve to uncover the truth sets her on a life-changing journey.

Accepted into a summer journalism program in NYC, Clae follows the threads of her family’s history, joined by her vibrant new friends, Nze and Joelle. From Brooklyn to Broadway, they uncover secrets, magic, and romance in a city that pulses with energy.

This unforgettable NYC summer will challenge everything Clae knows about her identity, the lies that hold families together, and the courage it takes to break free from generational patterns.

Charlene’s stories don’t just entertain—they inspire readers to explore their own narratives and claim their power.
